About Castello Sforzesco

Rising from the heart of Milan, Castello Sforzesco is one of the largest and most significant Renaissance fortresses in Europe. Originally built in 1360 by Galeazzo II Visconti as a defensive stronghold, it was entirely rebuilt in 1450 by Francesco Sforza — the condottiere who founded the Sforza dynasty and shaped Milan into one of the great powers of Renaissance Italy.

Under Ludovico il Moro, the castle became a magnet for the finest minds of the age. Leonardo da Vinci designed its moat defences, painted the famous Sala delle Asse ceiling, and worked here for nearly two decades. Bramante contributed to its architecture. The result was a fortress that was simultaneously a palace of extraordinary refinement — a symbol of power, culture, and ambition.

Today, Castello Sforzesco houses nine civic museums containing some of Milan's greatest treasures, including Michelangelo's final sculpture, the Pietà Rondanini. The castle grounds and the adjoining Parco Sempione are freely accessible to all visitors, making it one of the most rewarding cultural destinations in northern Italy.
